Year: 2023
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 20 x 16 inches
I spent my college years in Oklahoma, and had the chance to attend the Comanche Nation Fair in Lawton, Oklahoma around 2017. (Note: I am not an Indigenous American.) There were many performers competing in a wide range of Indigenous dance competitions, including the women's Fancy Shawl Dance depicted here. This painting captures a brief moment of rest amid an otherwise vigorous and highly athletic performance, a pause wherein the long fringe of the dancer's shawl continues to dazzle with its rippling, polychromatic motion.
