Bisexual Icon Li Shang
Exhibited in "Wish Upon a Star: An Art Tribute to Disney" 2023 (Insomnia Gallery, Houston, TX - June 9, 2023)
Year: 2023
Medium: Inkjet & Chinese colored ink on xuan paper (foreground figures); watercolor on Bristol paper (background)
Size: 9 x 9 inches (12 x 12 with mat)
A little tribute to a film that has shaped me twice over: once when I was 3 and excited to see Asian people on the big screen, and once when I was 18 and finally accepting that I was bi. This painting brings together traditional materials (yes, I used an ink stone to grind all the colored inks!) into an Andy Warhol-inspired composition that celebrates the Asian-American-ness inherent in the 1998 original, as well as the queerness that the 2019 live-action remake tried to scrub out.
The original painting is pre-matted and ready to frame.
